Alumni and Pastoral Resources

This page is a resource page for those engaged in ministry. Here you will find links to information about upcoming events, courses, partnerships, ministry opportunities and anything else that may be helpful in helping people engage ministry. Pastors and Alumni may also want to engage the events/courses on this page with those in their flock who are exploring pastoral call. The courses/events offered may be appropriate “taster” opportunities for seminary level education. Our prayer is that the resources offered on this page work to enhance the ministry of many and provide applicable tools as we seek to build God’s Kingdom.

MI Ordinations and Calls

MI Staff were so encouraged to hear from and participate in three ordinations in October and November, so we want to share that encouragement with our partners, supporters and friends!

Three churches are pleased to fill their call for pastor with MI alumni! See how communities are being served in Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan.

Pastor Debra Schowengerdt

When Debra was an MDiv student, she wrote her theology paper on the importance of the priesthood of all believers, and the value of people being equipped to minister, not just be consumers in their congregations. During her formation at MI, she and her husband, Ron, prepared to move to the Upper Peninsula to serve in church and out in the community. Now they have been living and serving there for a couple of years, and the passion God gave Debra for equipping others is coming to fruition!

Debra was ordained and called to a little country church (see picture) alongside a community of believers who feel like family and all participate. The members lead in the church, Wainola Lutheran, and in the community as deputy, nurse, emergency response workers, etc. Debra sees her and the other pastors’ roles as teachers and shepherds to support their growth in their faith, because church members will be “placed in situations that they need to know and communicate the hope that is in them.”

This church meets a couple of times per month so as to leave room for other community engagement. Debra and Ron have started inviting people into their home for Sunday evening “Afire.” (see image). They reach out to people in Atlantic Mine, like the waitress who said she can’t take Sunday mornings off, Christians who are looking to live more into their giftings, or people who have been estranged from the church but may come to worship in a friendly home.

MI staff member Leah Lehner comments on Debra’s new home church: “I can imagine this home church around the fireplace in the Schowengerdt living room. Debra led me and other staff and students in one of the most beautiful and intimate communion services I have experienced. I found it amazing that during the pandemic when we needed to worship through zoom, the way Debra taught, led sharing in small groups, and led us in communion made it easy to connect to Jesus and our brothers and sisters in Christ in an authentic way.”

Pastor Jason Christensen

Jason was a student in a MI’s Micro MDiv cohort at St Mark’s in Marion, IA. When 18 months of formation and classes left them wanting more, he and his cohort have continued as students and will graduate with a full MDiv next year. For part of their internships, the fab four all took turns preaching and leading and counseling at Word of Life Church in Fairfield, IA. They supported the church as the community experienced tragedies and stuck with them until a pastor position was filled. And in Jason, they got to call a pastor they already knew and loved! He and his family are well loved and welcomed there. Julia and Jason say the community is so hospitable, grateful, and happy following Jesus.

The fab four from the MDiv cohort (pictured below left to right, Michele, Alice, Jason, and John) were joined by their MI Academic Pastor, Eric Bluhm for the ordination service. Eric is so proud of his students as they step into their call! Jason is an aerospace engineer, musician, father, husband, and now pastor. Eric was especially proud when he got to observe Jason leading communion: “Jason has an exceptional ability to explain why we are doing confession and absolution, both the pre-communion liturgy and what is happening in communion. He has a presence for orienting those in the congregation to what is happening in the moment, and helping them participate in the moment.”

Pastor Scott Dirks

MI was contacted by a First Lutheran of Hope, MN,  looking to fill their call after their pastor, MI alumni Sandy Miller, retired. They hoped to recruit another alumni. A few months later, Scott answered that call!

Scott’s service was at a church that has done so well at raising up and sending out leaders and pastors, Lutheran Church of the Cross, Altoona, IA. His seminary cohort friends, Matt Suhr and Erin Wiggins led a reading and worship. Internship Coach and Pastor, Nathan Anenson, presided over the service, MI Mentor Bill Pratt prayed, and MI Academic Pastor Eric Bluhm gave a message. MI Instructors and Board Member, Pam and Eric Hulstrand and members of his new church were present to pray over Scott and Lisa. It was a family affair! Scott said, “Hundreds of people have poured into me, and now it’s time for me to pour into others.”

Eric shares how Scott is passionate, enthusiastic, practical, and open. He will model for his congregation how to be a follower of Jesus, including what individuals struggle with. He will lead by example in showing vulnerability and honesty to give testimony to how the Lord can transform. Scott can do theology, and in shepherd mode, he will not shy away from being in the messiness of life with his community.

Closing words for all pastors and ministry leaders:

Let’s echo the prayer written for Debra by MI Mentor, Pastor Paula Graves:

“God has prepared you for this season, but be ready for God to work in unexpected ways. Listen in peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow in confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. “

As Eric Bluhm shared in his message for Scott, let these words reach you:

You’re starting a new level of responsibility and service before the Lord. You’ve prepared and worked, and you can’t do this, but Christ in you can do this when you serve him. When people give you praise, receive the thanks. Then go to Jesus and privately give it up to the Lord. Take that same posture when you bear negative feedback, whether it's a crown of praise or thorns, give it to the Lord. “I will and I ask God to help me.”

The Master's Institute is happy to post approved ministry job openings from churches or ministries connected with MI students, staff, alumni, or supporters. Openings will remain on this page for 60 days and will be removed after that time. They may be reposted upon request. Those interested in posting can send job opportunities to info@miseminary.com.
